They provide the foundation for cross-selling and upselling, configurators and spare parts catalogues.<\/p><h2>Typical types of relationships<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Accessories:<\/strong> compatible batteries for a drill.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spare parts:<\/strong> filters, seals or wear parts for a device.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alternatives and upselling:<\/strong> similar or higher-value products.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Successors and predecessors:<\/strong> important when products are discontinued.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sets and bills of materials:<\/strong> components of a bundle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Compatibility:<\/strong> for example, vehicles that a part fits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why relationships are maintained in PIM<\/h2>\n<p>Relationships are often directional and have their own attributes, such as a quantity within a set or a sequence. Maintaining them in PIM makes them consistently available across all channels: as recommendations in the online shop, as an accessories page in a catalogue or in exports to retailers. Well-maintained relationships increase basket value and reduce incorrect purchases.<\/p>\n<h2>Example<\/h2>\n<p>A coffee machine manufacturer links each machine to compatible descalers, water filters and milk containers.
