It is the first step in the information supply chain.<\/p><h2>Where product information comes from<\/h2>\n<p>Product information originates in different parts of the business and beyond:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>ERP:<\/strong> item number, description, weight, customs tariff code, prices.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PLM and CAD:<\/strong> technical data, bills of materials, drawings.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Suppliers:<\/strong> data sheets, attributes, images, often provided in Excel or BMEcat format, or via portals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marketing and product management:<\/strong> copy, selling points, images.<\/li>\n<li><strong>External sources:<\/strong> data pools, standards, classification standards.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How a PIM system collects data<\/h2>\n<p>A PIM system imports data through interfaces, file imports or a supplier portal and maps it to its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/data-model-product-data-model\/\">data model<\/a>. This involves converting formats, such as units or code lists. It is important to define the authoritative source for each attribute. Otherwise, data from different sources will overwrite each other.<\/p>\n<h2>Example<\/h2>\n<p>A retailer receives data from 200 suppliers in different formats. Suppliers upload their data themselves through an onboarding portal, and the PIM system checks mandatory fields and flags any gaps.
