This is where the greatest effort in PIM implementation lies, not in the technology.<\/p><h2>Components of a data model<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Structure:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/product-categories-product-categories\/\">Categories<\/a> for navigation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/classifications-product-classification-classes\/\">classifications<\/a> for characteristics.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Attributes:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/properties-attributes\/\">Characteristics<\/a> with a data type, unit and permitted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/values\/\">values<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Levels:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/products\/\">Product<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/variants-items-and-skus\/\">variant<\/a>, with rules for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/inheritance\/\">inheritance<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relationships:<\/strong> Accessories, spare parts, sets (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/relationships-relations\/\">relationships<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contexts:<\/strong> Languages, countries and channels with their own values.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Rules:<\/strong> Mandatory fields and validation checks for each category and channel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why the data model matters<\/h2>\n<p>A good data model enables online shop filters, meets retailers&#8217; format requirements and keeps data maintenance to a minimum. A poor one creates duplicates, empty fields and manual work, and is difficult to change once the data has been migrated.
