Each attribute has a data type and is assigned a value for each product. Attributes are at the heart of every PIM data model.<\/p><h2>Types of attributes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Global attributes<\/strong> apply to all products, for example item number, name and brand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Specific attributes<\/strong> apply only to certain classes or categories, for example screen size for monitors. Some vendors call them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/features\/\">features<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Localisable attributes<\/strong> have a separate value for each language, for example descriptions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Channel-specific attributes<\/strong> have a separate value for each channel, for example a short description for marketplaces.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Variant axes<\/strong> distinguish between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/variants-items-and-skus\/\">variants<\/a>, for example size and colour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Setting up attributes correctly<\/h2>\n<p>Each attribute needs a clear definition, a data type, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/units-of-measurement\/\">unit<\/a> where applicable and, wherever possible, a fixed list of permitted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pim-consultants.com\/en\/pim-wiki\/values\/\">values<\/a>. Duplicate attributes with similar names are among the most common data modelling errors. Where industry standards such as ETIM or ECLASS apply, it is worth adopting their characteristics.<\/p>\n<h2>Example<\/h2>\n<p>For a cordless drill driver, a manufacturer maintains global attributes (name, brand, EAN), attributes specific to the \u201ccordless drill driver\u201d class (voltage in volts, torque in Nm, battery capacity in Ah) and localisable text in six languages.
