system to bring order to their product data. Six months later, the new system often looks just like the old Excel spreadsheets. The software is rarely to blame. What is missing is data governance: rules defining who maintains which data, what quality standards it must meet and how a product moves from its first data record to publication.<\/p>\n<p>Without these rules, a PIM system ends up holding the same incomplete and inconsistent data as before, just in one central location. The success of a PIM implementation therefore depends less on system selection than on who takes responsibility for data within the company.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6153ad1d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"6153ad1d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What Data Governance in PIM Involves<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7149b46c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7149b46c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><b>Roles and responsibilities.<\/b> Data governance defines who is authorised to do what. Typical roles include data stewards for specific areas such as marketing copy, technical data or images, and a data owner with overall responsibility. This makes it clear who creates data, who approves it and who can change it.<\/p>\n<p><b>Processes and approvals.<\/b> How does a new product move from the ERP system into PIM and from there to a marketplace? What checks are needed first? A PIM system can map these processes as workflows, for example enrichment, technical review, marketing approval and publication. But you can only automate what you have already defined.<\/p>\n<p><b>Quality rules.<\/b> What does not go in cannot come out. Rules such as \u201cevery product must have at least three images\u201d or \u201cproduct names must not exceed 80 characters\u201d are configured in the PIM system. Product management, marketing, e-commerce, IT and, where relevant, compliance should define the rules together so they are followed in day-to-day work.<\/p>\n<p><b>Define a complete product record.<\/b> Specify what a finished product record looks like: which fields are mandatory, which units to use and which images to include. This data model provides the foundation for configuring the PIM system.<\/p>\n<p><b>Start with one process.<\/b> Begin with the most important process, usually new product creation.
