Master Data Governance from SAP

SAP Master Data Governance, or SAP MDG, is SAP’s solution for centrally maintaining and approving master data. It runs on SAP S/4HANA and primarily covers material and product master data, business partners such as customers and suppliers, and financial master data. Custom data objects can also be added. In German-speaking markets, MDG is often the default choice for companies using SAP as their primary ERP. With its acquisition of Reltio in May 2026, SAP also added a cloud-based MDM platform to its portfolio.

Editions and capabilities

  • On-premises and private cloud: MDG on SAP S/4HANA offers the broadest functionality across all data domains.
  • Cloud Edition: A SaaS edition that currently focuses primarily on business partner data. Additional domains are on SAP’s roadmap.
  • Capabilities: Centralised record creation with change requests and approval workflows, consolidation of data from multiple systems, mass maintenance and data quality rules.

Strengths and limitations

MDG excels at managing clean, approved master data in SAP environments: material numbers, plant and sales data, suppliers and customers. Integration with S/4HANA is naturally tight. MDG is not designed for marketing and sales content such as product descriptions, images, channel-specific variants or marketplace data. Many companies therefore combine MDG for ERP master data with a PIM for product communication. Implementation and operation require SAP expertise and are typically handled by partners.

Who SAP MDG is suited to

SAP MDG is suited to companies using SAP S/4HANA that want to standardise master data across multiple legal entities and plants and manage approvals. Our article PIM vs. MDM explains how MDM and PIM work together.
