In brief: Product Data Management (PDM) manages the data created during product development and engineering: CAD models, drawings, bills of materials, versions and approvals. PIM, by contrast, prepares product data for marketing and sales.
PDM systems are engineering tools. They ensure that engineers work with the correct version of a drawing and that changes are traceable. A PIM system comes into play when a product needs to be sold: it takes selected technical data from PDM, adds copy, images and translations, and distributes them to online stores, catalogues and retailers.
| PDM | PIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Users | Development, engineering | Product management, marketing, sales |
| Content | CAD, drawings, bills of materials | Attributes, copy, images, translations |
| Goal | Develop and manufacture the product | Sell the product |
PDM is a core component of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), which covers the entire lifecycle from initial idea to phase-out. In many manufacturing companies, technical data flows from PDM or PLM into PIM via an interface. It is important to define which system is the system of record for each attribute.
