Open-Source PIM

In brief: An open-source PIM is a PIM system with publicly available source code. Companies can use and customise it without licence fees, but must cover the costs of implementation, operation and ongoing development, either in-house or through partners.

Benefits

  • no licence fees for the basic version
  • extensive customisation options and no vendor lock-in
  • active community and partner networks

Limitations

  • implementation and operation still incur costs
  • key features are often only available in paid enterprise editions
  • licensing models can change, as companies have recently experienced with several vendors

Who it suits

Companies with in-house development capabilities or a strong implementation partner that need extensive customisation. Total costs should be compared just as carefully as for licensed systems.
