Akeneo

Akeneo is a PIM vendor headquartered in Nantes, France, founded in 2013. The company has a German office in Düsseldorf. Akeneo made its name with an open-source version, but its focus today is on the cloud platform.

Akeneo PIM at a glance

Akeneo PIM supports product data import and export, data quality checks, taxonomy management and product hierarchies with variants. Support for multiple languages and currencies makes Akeneo an option for companies selling internationally. Extensions complement the PIM, for example for syndication to retailers and marketplaces. Akeneo recently acquired pricing specialist PricingHUB, bringing product data and pricing together.

Strengths and limitations

Akeneo has a modular architecture: companies license only the components they need, such as core PIM, DAM, supplier onboarding or syndication. The Activation module enables product data syndication to several hundred marketplaces, with AI assisting in field mapping. Supplier Data Manager lets suppliers submit their data directly, saving considerable time for businesses with frequently changing product ranges. We see limitations in GDSN: Akeneo does not operate its own data pool, so connectivity relies on partners and comes at an additional cost. Workflows are step-based, with no graphical designer for event-driven processes. AI agents such as Agentic Ziggy are still new and should be thoroughly tested before widespread deployment.

Who Akeneo is suited to

Customers ZEG, WÜSTHOF, Veganz, SLV and Urbanara illustrate its breadth, from bicycle retail, knives and food to lighting and home furnishings. Akeneo is widely used by brands and retailers with an online focus. An important consideration during selection: Akeneo continues to maintain the open-source Community Edition, which has followed a rolling release model since 2026, with mainly technical updates. New features are primarily introduced in the cloud editions. Ask for a demonstration of which features are included in each edition.
