SaaS PIM / Cloud or On-Premise

In brief: A SaaS PIM is delivered as a cloud service: the provider operates, updates and secures the system, while the company pays a subscription. With on-premise deployment, the PIM runs on infrastructure the company owns or rents and is responsible for.

Comparison

  • SaaS: fast deployment, automatic updates, predictable subscription costs and less internal IT effort, but less control over releases and customisation.
  • On-premise or private cloud: full control and extensive customisation, but responsibility for operations and updates, with greater internal effort.

Context

Most PIM providers now focus on SaaS. On-premise deployment is primarily chosen when internal policies, specific integrations or data protection requirements call for it. Open-source systems can often be deployed in either model.
