Product Data Quality

In brief: Product data quality describes how complete, accurate, consistent and up to date the information about a product is. PIM systems measure and maintain it through mandatory fields, validation rules, completeness indicators and approval workflows.

What makes good product data

  • Complete: All mandatory attributes for each category and channel are populated.
  • Accurate: Values match the product and are plausible.
  • Consistent: consistent spelling, units and value lists.
  • Up to date: Changes reach all channels promptly.
  • Unique: no duplicates, each product appears only once.

How a PIM system ensures quality

PIM systems provide automated validation: mandatory fields for each category and channel, format checks (for GTINs, for example), plausibility rules, completeness scores for each product and language, and data quality dashboards. Products are only approved once they meet the rules. Workflows show each contributor what is still missing.

Why it matters

Poor data costs sales and leads to returns. Retailers reject incomplete data, and AI applications produce incorrect results when data has gaps. But even the best system is ineffective without clear responsibilities. See Data Governance.
