Data migration

In brief: Data migration is the transfer of existing product data from legacy systems, Excel spreadsheets and file repositories into a new PIM system. It is the most frequently underestimated part of a PIM implementation.

Typical steps

  • Take stock of data sources and volumes
  • Map legacy fields to the new data model
  • Cleanse data: duplicates, obsolete items, inconsistent values
  • Run test migrations and obtain sign-off from business departments
  • Migrate to the production system and retire legacy sources

Tips

Do not migrate everything without reviewing it first. A migration is the ideal opportunity to clear out legacy clutter. Allow enough time for cleansing and testing, and involve business departments early.
