Pimcore

Pimcore profile

Pimcore is a platform for PIM, MDM, DAM and CMS, founded in Salzburg in 2010. Pimcore made its name as open-source software. The vendor has since changed its licensing model. In August 2026, the previous majority shareholder, Nordwind Growth, agreed to sell its stake to London-based investor Tenzing. Completion remains subject to competition clearance. According to Pimcore, the management team will remain unchanged.

What Pimcore covers

Pimcore brings several disciplines together on a single technical foundation: product data, master data, digital assets and web content. Data of any type can be integrated, consolidated and enriched in one interface. The data model is fully configurable, making Pimcore attractive to companies with their own development teams or agency partners. Customers include IKEA, LEGO, Bosch, Krombacher and Lavazza.

Open source, open core and new owners

Pimcore became known as open-source software under GPLv3. Those versions are still available: up to and including version 11 (platform release 2024.4), the Community Edition is licensed under GPLv3 and is therefore genuine open-source software. Pimcore partners state that security updates for these versions will be available until the end of 2026.

From version 12 (release 2025.1), the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL) applies. Pimcore itself describes this as “open core”: the source code remains publicly accessible, but only companies with annual revenue of up to €5 million may use the Community Edition free of charge. Anyone running Pimcore as SaaS for third parties needs an OEM licence. Strictly speaking, this is no longer an open-source licence. Those who need a free software licence can stay with the old GPL version or switch to OpenDXP, a further development of Pimcore 11 under GPLv3. This is why Pimcore is still listed under “Open Source” in our vendor filter: you can continue using the GPL versions up to version 11, but new features are now only available under the POCL. For existing and prospective customers, this means checking carefully which edition you need, what it costs and how the terms evolve under the new owner. Strengths and limitations

Pimcore is highly extensible and, depending on the edition, includes DAM, MDM, DXP and e-commerce capabilities. Prices for the paid editions are publicly available, and the Community Edition lets you test the system without a major investment, subject to the licensing terms that apply from version 12. With Copilot, an SDK for AI agents and the Data Spine governance layer, the backend is well prepared for AI. The Digital Product Passport and Battery Passport are on the roadmap. Limitations: there are no industry templates for B2C, a tailored proof of concept is only available through partners, and there are no ready-made connectors for many enterprise systems such as ERP or CPQ. These integrations must be built or purchased separately. OpenDXP is a free software alternative based on Pimcore 11.
