SAP Commerce Cloud overview
SAP Commerce Cloud is SAP’s commerce platform. Its origins lie in hybris AG, which was founded in Zug in 1997, later moved its headquarters to Munich and was acquired by SAP in 2013 for around US$1.5 billion. The platform includes Product Content Management (PCM), which allows product data to be managed directly for the SAP store. This is why PCM is often cited in tenders as an alternative to a separate PIM.
What PCM offers
- Product Cockpit in the back office: Manage individual products and view catalogues, categories and product ranges.
- Staging and online: Each catalogue has an editable staging version and an online version. Changes are published through synchronisation.
- Data model: Multiple hierarchies, variants and classifications, multilingual support and media.
- Workflows: Approvals and roles for product data maintenance.
Strengths and limitations
If your online store runs on SAP Commerce and your product data primarily serves that store, PCM is a natural choice: no additional licence, no additional interface and the same platform as the store. However, PCM is tied to the SAP Commerce storefront. Marketplaces, dealer portals, print and other stores need to be supplied separately, while capabilities for supplier onboarding, syndication and comprehensive DAM are largely absent. The user interface is also geared more towards trained e-commerce teams than product managers.
Key planning considerations
The last on-premises version, SAP Commerce 2205, reached the end of mainstream maintenance on 31 July 2026. According to SAP, there is no defined end-of-life date for SAP Commerce itself, and PCM remains part of SAP Commerce Cloud. Several PIM vendors refer to PCM being phased out in their marketing. We have not found an official SAP announcement to that effect. Nevertheless, on-premises customers face a decision: move to Commerce Cloud with PCM or use a standalone PIM upstream of the store. Within the SAP ecosystem, SAP Master Data Governance handles ERP master data.
Who SAP Commerce Cloud with PCM is suited to
PCM suits companies whose online business runs primarily on SAP Commerce. Those serving multiple channels are usually better off with a PIM upstream of the store.
