In brief: Digital products are goods without a physical form that are purchased and used online, such as software, e-books, music, online courses, tickets or licences. They also need product information that can be maintained in a PIM system.
Digital products have no weight, dimensions or stock levels in the traditional sense. Instead, other information matters: system requirements, file formats, duration, licensing model, language versions, compatibility, access method and updates. There are often many variants, such as individual, team and enterprise licences.
In a PIM system, digital products are assigned their own class with appropriate attributes. They are often linked to physical products: as accessories, as part of a set or as a service for a machine, such as a control app or a maintenance contract.
A heating equipment manufacturer offers a control app, a software subscription for remote maintenance and online training for installers with every unit. In the PIM system, these are separate products with a duration, pricing model and system requirements, linked to the equipment through relationships.
