Product information

In short: Product information is all the data used to describe and sell a product: name, item number, price, technical specifications, text, images, documents and relationships with other products. A PIM system manages it centrally for all channels.

Types of product information

  • Master data: Item number, EAN/GTIN, product name, brand, category.
  • Technical data: Dimensions, weight, material, performance, often structured according to classification standards.
  • Marketing content: Short and long descriptions, selling points, SEO copy, translations.
  • Media: Images, videos, 3D models, data sheets, instructions (media assets).
  • Logistics and compliance: Packaging data, dangerous goods information, customs tariff codes, sustainability information.
  • Relationships: Accessories, spare parts, alternatives (relationships).

What customers expect online

In e-commerce, product information takes the place of in-store advice. Customers expect comprehensive attributes for filtering and comparison, informative images and clear descriptions. Missing or contradictory information leads to abandoned purchases and returns. Retailers and marketplaces often reject incomplete data outright.

Where product information comes from

Data originates in many places: ERP and PLM systems, suppliers, product management and marketing. A PIM system gathers it (collection), cleanses and enriches it (enrichment) and distributes it to all channels. Product information is also becoming increasingly important for AI assistants that select products based on their attributes.
