MCP / Model Context Protocol

In brief: The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that enables AI applications to access external data sources and tools. It was introduced by Anthropic in late 2024 and is now supported by many vendors.

How MCP works

  • An MCP server provides data or capabilities, such as product searches or data queries.
  • An MCP client within an AI application uses these capabilities when they are needed for a task.
  • This means the AI does not need to be customised for each individual system.

MCP and PIM

Some PIM vendors already offer MCP servers. These enable AI assistants to access product data directly, for example to answer questions from sales teams and customers, or to validate and enrich data. This requires clean, structured data and clearly defined access rights.
