In brief: Media assets are all the media files associated with a product: photos, cut-out images, videos, 3D models, CAD drawings, data sheets and user manuals. They are usually stored in a media asset management or DAM system and linked to products in the PIM system.
The links are what matter: which image belongs to which variant, which is the main image, and which data sheet applies to which country? The PIM system maintains these associations and delivers the right formats and sizes for each channel. The files themselves are stored either in a built-in media module or in a separate DAM system.
A lighting manufacturer links each light fixture to a cut-out image, two lifestyle images, a data sheet for each language, a light distribution curve and a CE certificate. The online shop receives images in WebP format, the print catalogue receives high-resolution files, and specialist retailers receive a ZIP file containing all the documents. Find out more about how the systems work together in our article on PIM and DAM.
