Taxonomy

In brief: A taxonomy is a hierarchical organisation of terms, usually the structure of categories and product groups in PIM. It determines how products are found and filtered, and which attributes are assigned to them.

Types of taxonomies in PIM

  • Internal product taxonomy: the structure a company uses to organise its product range.
  • Channel taxonomies: separate category trees for an online shop, catalogue or marketplace.
  • Standard taxonomies: classifications such as ETIM, ECLASS, GS1 GPC or UNSPSC.

Best practice

A stable internal taxonomy provides the foundation. Channel structures and standards are derived from it through mapping, rather than maintained separately. Hierarchies that are too deep make maintenance harder, while those that are too shallow make navigation more difficult.
