Digital Product Passport (DPP)

In brief: The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a digital record providing information on a product’s origin, materials, sustainability, repair and disposal. It is being made mandatory in the EU for specific product groups in stages under the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR).

What the product passport contains

  • Unique product identification and manufacturer details
  • Materials, ingredients and, where applicable, substances of concern
  • Information on carbon footprint, durability and repairability
  • Guidance on recycling and disposal

Timeline

The battery passport under the EU Batteries Regulation comes first. For other product groups, the EU will gradually define the requirements in separate legal acts. Companies should assess early on which data they already have and where it is stored.

DPP and PIM

Much of the required information is product data and belongs in the PIM system, supplemented by data from PLM, ERP and suppliers. A well-structured PIM system is therefore an important foundation.
