GDSN / Global Data Synchronization Network

In brief: GDSN is a global GS1 network that enables manufacturers and retailers to exchange standardized product master data. The data is provided in certified data pools and synchronized with recipients.

How GDSN works

  • The manufacturer uploads its product data to a certified data pool.
  • Retailers subscribe to the data through their own data pool.
  • The pools coordinate through a central registry to ensure that updates reach recipients.
  • Products are uniquely identified by their GTIN.

Where GDSN matters

Major retailers require data via GDSN, particularly in the grocery, drugstore, home improvement, DIY and healthcare sectors. Mandatory information such as ingredients, allergens, dimensions and packaging data must strictly comply with the standard.

GDSN and PIM

A PIM system provides the data, maps it to GDSN attributes and validates it. Many PIM systems offer ready-made connectors to data pools for this purpose.
