Golden Record

In brief: The Golden Record is the complete, validated master record for a product. It brings together data from all sources and is the single authoritative version that feeds all channels.

How a Golden Record is created

  • Collect: Data from ERP, PLM, suppliers and specialist departments is brought together.
  • Cleanse: Duplicates are resolved and formats standardised.
  • Define: The authoritative source is identified for each attribute.
  • Enrich and validate: Text, media and translations are added, and rules check for completeness.

Golden Record and Single Source of Truth

The Single Source of Truth describes the principle that every piece of information has exactly one authoritative source. The Golden Record is the result of applying this principle to an individual product. In a PIM system, it provides the foundation for online stores, catalogues, marketplaces and data supplied to retailers.

Example

The ERP provides the item number and price, the PLM provides technical data, marketing provides text and the DAM provides images. The PIM system combines these into a single record for consistent syndication across all channels.
