Master data

In brief: Master data is core business data that remains stable over time, such as data on products, customers and suppliers. Product master data such as item numbers, names and dimensions is usually held in the ERP system and enriched with sales-related content in the PIM system.

Master data and transactional data

  • Master data rarely changes. Examples include item numbers, weights and suppliers.
  • Transactional data is generated continuously. Examples include orders, inventory movements and invoices.

How master data works across systems

The ERP system maintains commercial master data, an MDM system standardises master data across multiple business areas, and the PIM system enriches product data with text, attributes and media. It is essential to define which system is the system of record for each field.
